There are three shapes that can be used to create patterns: rectangles, circles and ellipses. Before you select a shape, first verify the Line Appearances are set to the desired color, style, and size. Then select a shape by clicking on the icon at the top left of the working area and click on the desired shape.

Once you have selected a shape, you can draw multiple versions. To change from one type of shape to another, click on the Select icon. To discontinue drawing shapes, press the Esc key.

Shapes may either be outlines, or filled with a color. To select a color for the fill, click the icon in the top left corner of the working area. The available colors will be the same as the colors used for lines including the Custom Colors.

Drawing Rectangles

An important use of the rectangle tool is to create a Bounding Box for patterns. When patterns are placed inside the Bounding Box, the accuracy of the size of the patterns can be verified when they are printed or used by another program. For the patterns used for these instructions the Bounding Box is 8" by 10-1/2" (20.3 by 26.7 cm) so that the files can be printed using a standard desktop printer.
