Computer Aided Pattern Design
by Don McCunn Pattern LayoutStudio software provides a convenient way for determining how much fabric is going to be required for a given project. This depends on how the patterns are to be layed out for cutting. The pattern layout is dependent on the width of the fabric. The specific layout is also dependent on whether the fabric has a directional design or has a directional pile like velvet. This video shows how three possible yardage requirements can be determined. The measurement rectangle used to represent the fabric is in quarter-scale inches. This needs to be multiplied by 4 for the full size then divided by 36 to convert it to yards. This video demonstrates determining the yardage for the 1970s Swirly Skirt. Swirly Skirt (zip)
