Computer Aided Pattern Design by Don McCunn
Designing from Master Patterns
Master Patterns show the shape of the body that a garment is being designed for. These patterns can be changed for a specific design using the techniques described in How to Make Seing Patterns and Fashion & Costume Design in Quarter Scale.
The following instructions demonstrate how these techniques can be achieved using CAPD. They use actual garment designs which are indicated in the square brackets below.
- 1. Master Patterns (8:38)
- The Master Patterns need to be prepared for the design changes described here.
- 2. Changing External Lines [Vest] (6:52 & 6:26)
- External lines, such as necklines, can be changed by simply drawing in the desired shape. Creating a vest for men or women is shown in this class.
- 4. Changing Seams [Shirt Yoke] (4:02)
- The location of seams, such as a yoke for a man's or woman's shirt, is changed by removing a piece from one pattern and adding it onto another.
- 5. Changing Dart Locations [Side Dart] (1:43)
- Upper darts for the Master Patterns are shown coming from the armscye. Darts such as this can be moved to different locations.
- 6. Changing Darts to Seams [Vest] (5:02)
- The point of darts terminate in the middle of the fabric. These darts can be changed to seams. This example adds a Princess Seam to the vest created during Changing External Lines.
- 7. Working with Stretch Fabric (5:25)
- Woven fabric is two-dimensional. Stretch fabric can be three-dimensional allowing for darts to be removed.
- 8. Adding Fullness [A-Line Skirt] (4:09)
- Fullness extends fabric away from the body. It is done by separating the pattern into pieces as shown in Duplicating/Replicating lines. This class shows how to change a dart to fullness for an A-Line skirt.
